Linux viable?

  • Hello,

I'm planning to do a full makeover for my PC, changing OS from Win 11 to a Linux derivate. This poses the following questions to me:
    1. Does the Arcadia Launcher work with Linux in general?
    2. Which Linux OS's will work / will NOT work?
    3. Is there anythig special I need to know when using Arcadia with Linux?
    4. Can you think of any question I should have asked here?

    Thanks in advance!

    Fabian

    Hi, thanks for your questions.

CoA Launcher and the game client are officially Windows-focused, but we do allow running them through Wine, Lutris, or Proton. At the moment, we do not know any active players using Linux, so we cannot provide a confirmed list of working distributions or a tested setup. If you choose Linux, please treat it as an unsupported/experimental configuration: compatibility may vary, and launcher/game updates can break a previously working setup. We strongly recommend keeping a backup of your game folder and a Windows fallback (for example dual boot) in case troubleshooting is needed.

If you'll find a way please share it with us ;)

  • As a further to this I have my own server side setup of Runes of Magic files which is considerably older than this.

As for running the client i have successfully run the Linux / windows sim Winwine on my own pc with Ubuntu 2025 on it. The client server works very well and I have my grandcchildren playing on it as sort of low level beta testers. They are using Ubuntu on laptops of varying styles and specs. So far I have had one connection issue that turned out to be a closed port on my server.

This has been going on now for 4 months at this time (Apr 25 2026) I have seen issues on some of their play when the lag gets a bit choppy due to winwines habits of bulk batch rather than a slower stream. I realise this is RoM and not CoA.

What Im proposing is to go with a new setup on a laptop (non gaming ) 16GB ram i5 and using Ubuntu latest version, see how it performs on the actual game servers. I get a good connection with server all the time (Ping 24 - 30 max) and ill see how the thing performs and add an update to this string.

  • Just as an update im at work shortly and have left a Ubuntu system connected to CoA and a MINT Laptop connected to CoA

Both are running a small movement macro and set on maximum video stats on a 6GB card in each system.

Im off work tomorrow and will have time to go through the conection logs and any errors that appear.

  • Ok as promised.

The Laptop just a cheap 8GB AM4 running Linx : MINT, Still connected and works fine in WB battles, though fps is cut to 80 but still usable, this isnt a gaming machine and is fairly low spec. So on this platform Win WINE is used and its a pass for connection and client stability. This of course will depend on where you are in the globe and your internet availability. The connection remained fairly stable on a normal high def Broadband internet, non fibre with max ping time being around 104.

The desktop, again just ageneral use non gaming with ancient GTX 760 4GB card and 16GB of ram. I5 processor at 2k ish.

This one had Ubuntu Pro on it (2026) latest version again using Win WINE and on my fibre internet.

Game and boss fights all worked as expected, max FPS in WB fight 190, ping less than 40 (mainly due to light speed internet) A few frames of screen tear but works fine. The fans did go mad during the boss fight but this one had intel i5 processor at 2.4ghz, Windows 10.

For the testing results it seems that WINE on most Linux sources is able to run the CoA client and afford a decent speed and connection.

    ** DISCLAIMER **

This is a sample of two computers and two Operating systems, so the results will be informative but not proof of concept. WINE appears to be stable on both platforms, though I would expect degradation of operations if you do Mutli tasking (VOIP video chat and web chat voice). My computers are using the latest of each version of software and neither is needing payment to use it. Each platform had no background non essential apps in use during the checking. Both systems are classed as Internet Browsing & low end gaming use.

Your equipment it is recommended that it has a minimu of 8GB ram and of course the specified sizes for the client and loader programs for CoA. Upon installing it is recommnded you check for any necessary updates on the Ubuntu platforms especially where standard C++ libs are concerned.
